Description

NIST is undertaking an ambitious study of complex laser-matter interactions to develop a fundamental understanding of the multiscale material modifications in complicated welding processes, such as invisible and dissimilar welds. This program unites NIST expertise in materials characterization and laser metrology to demonstrate novel approaches to laser welding and in situ monitoring. Drawing on NIST resources, as well as the manufacturing expertise of key industrial collaborators, we are constructing a laser welding test bed to investigate novel approaches for welding dissimilar metals. The simultaneous availability of a well-instrumented laser welding test bed, a wide range of sophisticated post-process analysis tools, and a robust availability of fundamental material properties data creates a unique opportunity for research into computational modeling of such systems. Domains for advance might include elements such as laser-plume interaction, heat-affected zone phase evolution, and process sensitivities to material properties.
