The research is strongly computer-oriented and directed at developing an improved understanding of the relations among the chemistry, microstructure, properties, and service life of high-performance concrete and other random microstructure composite materials. Research includes the development and experimental validation of computer-based models of (1) effects of microstructure on transport properties, elastic properties, and strength; (2) mechanisms of material degradation; and (3) the effects of particle shape on properties of composite materials. Chemical and microstructural studies are performed using a variety of techniques including scanning electron microscopy, image analysis, x-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, x-ray absorption, and x-ray computed tomography. Numerical methods include finite difference and finite element techniques applied to three-dimensional models of random materials.
