Description

Research focuses on developing new, innovative approaches for the separation and detection of trace-level organic species in complex natural matrices. Topics include (1) the design, synthesis, and characterization of bonded stationary phases for liquid chromatography (LC), gas chromatography (GC), and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC); (2) development of novel separation media/modes for electromigration separation techniques (e.g., capillary electrophoresis [CE], capillary gel electrophoresis, micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography, and capillary electrochromatography); (3) development and application of on-line multidimensional separation techniques based on orthogonal methodologies (LC-GC, LC-CE, LC-LC, GC-GC); (4) fast separation technology in GC, LC, SFC, and CE; (5) application of existing separation modes in novel combinations (e.g., chiral separations in SFC and CE); (6) design of new separation systems based on micellar and liposomal phases, antibody/antigen and receptor/ligand associations, and size-selective networks; (7) sensitive and/or selective detection systems for microcolumn separations; (e.g., mass spectrometry, laser-excited fluorescence, electrochemical, chemical reaction, and chemiluminescence approaches); and (8) chromatographic and electrophoretic approaches for the measurement of physicochemical properties such as octanol/water partition coefficients, aqueous solubilities, and vapor pressures. Research will emphasize applications to environmental, clinical, nutritional, and forensic disciplines.
