Naturally derived nanosized fillers and polymeric materials are important for the next generation of polymer composites, adhesives, and thin films. These materials have the potential to replace currently used hazardous or non-renewable technologies. Current research has focused on the initial properties of natural materials and whether these materials exhibit similar or better performance than synthesized analogues. This research focuses on understanding the long-term properties and degradation products of these materials subjected to environmental degradation such as ultraviolet exposure, water exposure, and thermal degradation. The measurements are conducted at the micrometer to nanometer scale using depth sensing indentation and atomic force microscopy. The changes in mechanical properties are compared to infrared spectroscopy, XPS, confocal microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy measurements.
