The NCNR operates state-of-the-art diffractometers dedicated to neutron and x-ray strain analysis and texture characterization. Researchers nationwide use these instruments extensively, both for industrial applications and also to perform exciting basic research. The complexity of the projects often requires the use of a variety of other complementary NIST facilities such as in metals processing, metallography, synchrotron x-ray lines (at Argonne), and metal forming. Current research interests in the residual stress and texture group include advancing neutron diffraction instrumentation for strain mapping; the characterization of springback stresses in sheet metal forming; modeling of elastic interactions in real microstructures; microstructure-mechanical property relationships in coatings; residual stress determination around welds, including friction-stir welds; and the mapping of machining-induced residual stresses. Interested applicants from the areas of physics, materials science, or mechanical engineering are encouraged to submit research proposals in any of the above areas. New and original projects are also welcome.
