Description
We seek candidates to develop and investigate Weyl semimetals and 2D materials as components to waveguide and spintronic structures. The capability to characterize and model structures containing unconventional materials that can control electromagnetic waves is crucial for next generation optical and electronic systems. There have recently been significant efforts experimentally to investigate new types of semimetal materials due to their exotic electromagnetic and transport properties. A post-doc is needed to develop, configure and implement theory and numerical algorithms to solve these complex phenomena. The developed theory and codes will be general enough to accommodate several important classes of quantum and classical electromagnetic systems. We also investigate multilayer planar structures. A key point is the behavior of the permittivity tensor in Weyl semimetals and 2D materials as a function of the system parameters, which can be determined from a first principles approach. We will find the general mode spectra to characterize the geometrical and material parameters that result in the optimal transport of electromagnetic energy within the semimetal. We will also develop the necessary numerical and analytical tools that will permit efficient calculation of the electromagnetic fields, group velocity, and energy flow throughout the system. Emphasis will be placed on implementing parameters that are consistent with current fabrication capabilities. This project will compliment our previous discovery where semimetal structures were shown to perfectly absorb incident electromagnetic radiation.
