Some researchers in the academic community have advocated that modelers today have not yet fully exploited the connections between conceptual and so-called physics-based models. Recent NWS research has shown the validity of modifying the conceptual Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting Model (SAC-SMA) to include a physics-based approach to modeling the effects of frozen ground on the rainfall-runoff process. Given this success, additional modifications to the SAC-SMA model may be possible. Topics include the dynamic effects of vegetation and treatment of evapo-transpiration, addition of infiltration schemes, channel losses, and others.
