Description

Over the past several years, the Assimilation and Modeling Branch of the Global Systems Division has been developing a mesoscale data assimilation system based on the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecast (WRF-ARW) model and the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) analysis. This system has two main very-short range forecast applications involving frequent (1-hour) updating: the Rapid Refresh (RR) at 13km horizontal resolution over North America and the convection-allowing High-Resolution Rapid Refresh at 3km over the conterminous US nested within the RR.

Opportunities are available to use this system and the data that support it, and to contribute to advanced development for this system. Examples of possible research topics include research on weather analysis and prediction on scales ranging from the convective to the synoptic; initialization of high-resolution, convection allowing models for very short range prediction; development, testing, and evaluation of new or existing physical parameterizations or suites of parameterizations, explicit prediction of mesoscale convective systems; and techniques for quantitative precipitation forecasting using convection-allowng models. Interaction and collaboration with other members of the large atmospheric science community in Boulder is encouraged.

$5000 supplement for PhD in Atmospheric Modeling

Experience Supplement:
Postdoctoral and Senior Associates will receive an appropriately higher stipend based on the number of years of experience past their PhD.
