Sustainability and particularly urban sustainability is a multifaceted issue that includes issues encompassing material and energy use, waste generation, economic and social well-being, human health, and ecological health. There is an opportunity to apply economic and ecological metrics to measure sustainability of an urban area and evaluate alternative decision scenarios. The Economist will work with a multidisciplinary team to evaluate sustainability of a chosen urban area. The applicant will work on economic measures of sustainability, and ecological footprint thus integrating economic, environmental, and ecological health. This research is part of a larger project: "Integrated Solutions for Sustainable Communities" under Sustainable and Healthy Communities (SHC) research program.
The Sustainable Technologies Division uses a multidisciplinary approach, which employs ecologists, economists, engineers, environmental scientists, geographers, and physical scientists, to address sustainability issues in regional environmental management, watershed management and supply chain management. The Sustainable Technology Division has developed several sustainability metrics and has successfully applied those metrics to measuring long-term regional sustainability. Some of the metrics that have been developed are Ecological Footprint, Green Net Regional Product, Energy, and Fisher information. The applicant is expected to collect relevant data, analyze using suitable methods, write reports, and produce journal articles.
