Description

Sensory disturbances are some of the most frequent symptoms reported by humans following exposure to toxicants. Objective quantification of alterations in sensory function in an animal species will help us to assess a compound’s neurotoxic potential. Sensory evoked potentials involve presenting the test subject with a visual, auditory, or somatosensory stimulus and recording the neural activity generated by the stimulus. Alterations in evoked potentials following chemical exposure are considered adverse effects. We record visual, auditory, and somatosensory evoked potentials; compound nerve action potentials; and nerve conduction velocity as measures of neurological function. Assessment of waveforms at various portions of sensory pathways helps localize the anatomical location of neurological deficits. Current research examines the effects of chemical mixtures on neurophysiological function and measures of chemical exposure (pharmacokinetic, biochemical endpoints). Bioindicators of response are identified and measured as an index of effects from complex mixtures. These measures are used to help define mode-of-action pathways, to help with extrapolation from in vitro to in vivo studies, and finally to human responses. We are particularly interested n identifying non-additive interactions.
