Description

This research focuses on the development of optical diagnostic tools to further our understanding of high-speed combustion processes so that performance (e.g., combustion efficiency, thrust) can be improved. A variety of optical tools is used to study a broad range of mixing and combustion problems that are relevant to this goal. These optical diagnostics include planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), particle-image velocimetry (PIV), Rayleigh and Raman scattering, coherent anti-stokes Raman scattering (CARS), pulsed holography, and tunable diode-laser absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, there is a desire and need to develop and apply emerging techniques such as high-speed diagnostics, including kHz-rate PLIF, PIV, and coherent diagnostics (e.g., CARS). The range of problems to which these methods are applied includes the small laboratory scale (e.g., the stabilization of turbulent jet flames) and the large scale (e.g., stabilization of flames within a supersonic combusting ramjet engine). In addition to extensive high-speed test facilities, a well-equipped optics laboratory is available where techniques can be tested in small-scale flow fields prior to being employed in the large-scale facilities. Finally, through collaborative research efforts--where diagnostics and facility support are provided--the education of graduate students is accomplished while also satisfying our primary mission.

$3,000 Supplement for Doctorates in Engineering & Computer Science

Experience Supplement:
Postdoctoral and Senior Associates will receive an appropriately higher stipend based on the number of years of experience past their PhD.
