We are interested in combining nanomaterials, smart materials, and integrated devices with lightweight structural composites to improve the combined performance of disparate functions or to enhance system agility using adaptive material system concepts. Adaptive materials systems can include morphing via actuated mechanisms with deformable skins, such as shape memory composites, variable EM interactions with liquid metal constituents, and active thermal management via microvascular composites. Integrated devices can include novel nanomaterial-based interfacial sensors for distributed flow sensing and for shear sensing of bonded composites, structural power storage, and transduction and feedback elements for alternative and assured composite curing. Both candidates with skills in multiphysics design, analysis, material selection, and optimization, as well as processing of polymer composite, nanomaterials and integration of devices are sought. In particular, many processes are accelerated by additive processing methods.
