Description

We are investigating the synthesis and characterization of dyes, nanoparticles, and polymers for nonlinear optics applications. The systems we are studying include two photon dyes, porphyrins, phthalocyanines, organometallic chromophores, nanoparticles, and polymers. Our laboratory includes facilities for synthesis and fabricating solid-state samples. Materials characterization is performed using a variety of laser techniques including z-scan, laser flash photolysis, nonlinear fluorescence, nonlinear absorption, and excited state absorption. Measurements are made in a comprehensive, state-of-the-art laser facility which includes femtosecond, picosecond, nanosecond, and microsecond laser sources tunable throughout the visible and near infrared. In addition to materials development and characterization, new device designs that incorporate these nonlinear materials are proposed and tested. Researchers with experience in chemical synthesis, materials engineering, beam propagation modeling, and nonlinear spectroscopy are encouraged to apply.
