Quantum networking exploits particular features of quantum mechanics to provide ultra-secure networks that are both tamper proof and tamper evident. These networks are comprised of distant memory nodes connected via photon-based interfaces. This in-house research area focuses on quantum memory nodes consisting of linear arrays of trapped-ion qubits interfaced with photon-based qubits for long distance communication. Both the network nodes and the photon-based interconnects have quantum information processing capabilities. Extensions of this research include distributed quantum computing. The research includes photon-mediated entanglement using trapped ions, phonon-mediated entanglement using trapped ions, trapped-ion quantum information processing, quantum frequency conversion, and ion-photon interfaces. Other areas of interest include hybrid systems for quantum information processing.
