The mission of the AFRL's Radio Frequency (RF) Research Branch (RHDR) is to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying the interaction of electromagnetic directed energy (DE) with biological systems. One of the goals is to exploit this energy to modulate neuronal circuits.  Our current study aims to determine how RF waves (frequencies in MHz to THz range) interact with intracellular structures, specifically the cytoskeleton microtubules (MTs). We intend to identify RF frequencies that positively or negatively modulate the neuronal MT network. We believe that RF energy may provide a non-invasive method to remotely control neurological activity (stimulation/inhibition) at range, potentially impacting functions in the central nervous system, including concentration, memory, and cognitive performance.  Specifically, we seek to provide a scientific basis to answer the following questions: (1) What are the exact biophysical and biochemical mechanisms that govern RF interactions with neuronal systems? (2) Can these mechanisms be exploited for selective stimulation of neuronal activity and communication?  Our current work investigates the effect of RF on neuronal cells and brain slices. We examine changes in neuronal cell processes and cell morphology, MTs function, gene expression and epigenetic patterns, and intrinsic and evoked synaptic transmission.

Our team has widespread expertise in several research areas, including biophysics, molecular and cellular biology, computer science, genomics, bioinformatics and proteomics, as well as physics, optics and biomedical engineering. Experience Supplement:
Postdoctoral and Senior Associates will receive an appropriately higher stipend based on the number of years of experience past their PhD.
