This research aims to identify novel molecular recognition elements for detection or mitigation of infectious diseases. Initial emphasis will be on viral agents of hemorrhagic and encephalitic diseases. During the course of this study, viral-host relationships will be investigated to determine viral genomic diversity and population dynamics in relation to host response transcription. The research involves in vitro and in vivo studies, and relies on modern molecular biological, genomic, and proteomic technologies utilizing microarrays, next-generation sequencing, and tandem mass spectrometry. The results from these studies will be analyzed and compared. Computational biology systems will be developed and/or implemented for analysis of viral and host genes, genomic and proteomic data, and reconstruction and integration of host-pathogen interaction pathways, networks, and biomarkers.
