As the technology for hyperspectral imaging matures, the remote acquisition of chemical information will become more accessible. The data collected through hyperspectral analysis is represented by a cube-where two of the dimensions represent spatial information-x and y axes of the focal plane and the third dimension represents an intensity at a given wavelength. Because hyperspectral imagery is capable of recording the relative intensity of electromagnetic radiation divided among hundreds of narrow bands, it has the ability to greatly extend the situational awareness of soldiers and combatant commanders. Material or object specific detection requires frequency resolved data within the image. Hyperspectral imaging in the VISNIR, SWIR, and MWIR can provide a means of detecting molecularly similar species and mapping chemical heterogeneity within the spatial plane of the detector. The challenge in using hyperspectral data for chemical agent detection is in processing the data. This project seeks to answer a number of important questions about the application of this imaging strategy for the special needs of the soldier.
